Aloe Vera gel

Aloe Vera is well known for its antibacterial and antiviral properties which help fight bacteria and fungi present on the skin scalp. To use it, simply extract the from the aloe Vera leave, massage the gel into your scalp. Leave for 1hour before washing it off. Repeat the process 3 times a week.

 Apple cider vinegar

It is one of the most effective dandruff remedies for dandruff. It helps change the pH level of your scalp, making it difficult for yeast to grow. To apply, mix same quantity of apple vinegar and water and use the mixture to massage your scalp, leave for 20mins before rinse off with lukewarm water. Repeat daily for a week.

Note: Please do not use this method if you have wound on your head because of the burning sensation.

 Garlic and Honey

Honey has anti-fungal and anti-candida properties. This combination is also one of the best home remedies for treating dandruff. To apply, Crush 6 cloves of garlic add it to seven tablespoons of organic honey and mix well. Rub and Massage the mixture thoroughly on your scalp. Rinse it after 15mins and wash your scalp and hair with anti-dandruff shampoo to get rid of garlic odor.

Using Fenugreek Seeds

This is by grinding a tablespoon of fenugreek seed; soak the ground seed in two cups of water for like 1 hour. Apply the mixture on your hair scalp at night, massage very well. Leave till morning and then rinse off with lukewarm water.

Tee Tree Oil

Tea tree oil is another method believed to be an excellent home remedy to get rid of dandruff. To apply, get a shampoo containing 5% of tea tree oil, wash your hair with it and massage/ Rub it on the scalp. Leave it for 5 minutes before washing it off. Repeat the same process every day till dandruff disappears from your scalp. You can also add small drops of tea tree oil to your favorite shampoo as you wash normally.


Mouthwash has antifungal properties which help prevent dandruff causing yeast from growing. To apply, Rinse your hair with normal shampoo, and then finally wash it off with an alcohol-based mouthwash.

Coconut Oil

This is one of the best-tested methods for dandruff treatment which is best suited for dry hair. To apply, add some coconut oil on your scalp and massaging gently. Leave for one hour before washing it off. Repeat once daily.

Basil Leaves

It has antifungal and antibacterial properties which make them an excellent home remedy for dandruff.

To apply, simply extract the juice of basil leaves and mix it with some powder of Indian gooseberry leaves to form a paste. Massage it on the scalp and wash off with water after 2 hours.

Olive Oil

Apply ten (10) drops of olive oil to your scalp and leave it overnight, wrap your hair in a towel or shower cap so that the oil gets well absorbed by your scalp, wash it off in the morning. For a faster cure, get a shampoo that contains olive oil.


It has anti-inflammatory properties which help trigger the growth of hair and also keep dandruff under check. To apply, get a ginger and grate it. Squeeze the ginger in a small bowl containing four (4) ounces of sesame oil. Mix the ingredients very well and massage on your scalp. Rinse off after 2hours with a mild shampoo.


It contains active ingredient called salicylic acid. To apply, add powdered aspirin to your shampoo. Wash your hair and scalp, leave for 3 mins before rinsing it off with warm water.

Epsom Salt

Dampen your scalp with Epsom salt and massage it for 2-3 minutes. Then, rinse off with shampoo.

Lemon Juice and yogurt

Mix some yogurt and juice of 1 lemon in a bowl. Apply this mixture on your scalp and gently massage it on your scalp. Leave it on for 20 minutes before washing it off.  Repeat the process as often as possible until dandruff disappears.

General tips to prevent dandruff.

Always clean your comb or hairbrush with vinegar on regular basis.

Always wear a swimming cap so as to protect your hair from the effect of chlorine water.

Always keep your hair moisturized by using a conditioner at least three (3) times in a week.

Before you use any of the above dandruff home remedies make sure you do a patch test to make sure you are not allergic to anything.

Don’t expose your hair to the sun, if you step out in the afternoon always cover your hair with a scarf or wear a cap to avoid direct sun rays.
