Allergic rhinitis developed when the body’s immune system overreacts to any substance that is mostly not harmful. Examples of common triggers of allergic rhinitis are pollen, dust, and pet dander.

Besides a stuffy nose, other symptoms may include sneezing, a runny nose, and itching of eyes. It’s unclear why some people develop allergic rhinitis, but having a family history of allergies is a major risk factor.

Viral infections

Atrophic rhinitis

Atrophic rhinitis is another major cause of stuffy nose, this occurs when you experience thinning and hardening of the mucous membranes of your nose. The thinning tissues in the nose make it easier for bacteria to grow and lead to a nose infection. The affected person may also experience crusts inside the nose.

This condition is most common in people who have had multiple nose surgeries.

Saline solution is a mixture of salt in water at equal concentration. It can also be called “saltwater solution”. Using a nasal saline spray to get rid of stuffy nose can help increase the moisture in your nostrils, thin mucus in the nostrils and also dissolve crust in the nasal passage, thereby improve breathing.


What you’ll need

    One teaspoon of sea salt (not table salt, or any kind of salt-rich in iodine!)

    Half teaspoon of baking soda (optional)

    Eight ounces or one cup of water that is either purified or has been boiled

    One sterile glass jar

    A dropper

Add the right quantity of salt and the baking soda to your clean jar, and then add the water (if you boiled it, make sure you allow it cooled! Put the lid on the jar and shake well. Shake before every use.

Ensure your dropper is well cleaned and sterile, blow as much mucus out of your nose as possible just before you start the process. Then, lie on your back with your head hanging off so as to prevent the solution from running out. Put the tip of the dropper inside your nostril, taking care not to smear it all inside your nose. Apply 1-3 drops per nostril. It may sting the first few seconds. Remain in the same position for 5-10 minutes so as to allow the solution to flow into the nasal passages. Then, blow out your nose. You can repeat same procedure up to 3 times a day.

For best and effective result, it is advisable to warm the solution slightly before using it and always store at room temperature up to a week. Saline spray is a great method of how to get rid of stuffy nose.

Stuffy nose cure with Spicy food

Food spices like chili peppers, garlic, horseradish, black pepper, ginger and curry spices are said to be mucokinetic, or mucous-thinning active. Snacking on any of these spicy vegetables is believed by some people to help in stuffy nose cure. If you have probably experienced a runny nose or teary eyes as a result of hot food before, this can be a great method of how to get rid of stuffy nose fast. Although the benefits of the hot shower may not last, it will at least provide a quick temporary relief.

-A shower with hot water

-A towel


Take a hot water shower that you can withstand and stay in there for at least 15 minutes.

Ensure the bathroom door is closed so as to prevent the steam from the hot water to escape, and shove your towel under the door to keep the precious steam in. Be careful not to burn your face with the hot water or steam.

Alternatively, use a warm compress on your stuffy nose. This will help unclog a stuffy nose by opening the nasal passages. To apply a warm compress, first, soak a towel in warm water and squeeze the excess water out of the towel. Fold and place and place the towel over your nose and forehead. The warmth of the towel can provide comfort from any pain and help reduce the inflammation in the nostrils. This process can be repeated as often as necessary.

How to clear stuffy nose with Neti Pot

Draining your sinuses is another great method of how to get rid of stuffy nose fast. A neti pot looks like a small teapot, which you fill with distilled or sterile water. To apply, simply insert the spout into one nostril while tilting your head to the other side, allowing the solution or distilled water to flow out through your other nostril, flush mucus and fluids out of your nasal passages. Do this for one-two minutes and repeat the same process for other nostrils. The  U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) recommends the use of distilled or sterile water instead of tap water.
